AI Disinformation Campaign Targets Orbán's Rival, Exploits War Fears in Hungary
Right-wing party's use of AI-generated videos amplifies xenophobia and manipulates public opinion in a bid to cling to power.

As Hungary gears up for pivotal elections, the ruling Fidesz party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is employing increasingly alarming tactics, including the use of AI-generated videos, to demonize political opponents and stoke fears surrounding the war in Ukraine. These videos, designed to spread disinformation, exploit anxieties about national security and manipulate voters into supporting Orbán's increasingly authoritarian regime. A particularly egregious example is a video depicting the simulated execution of a soldier, a deeply disturbing and unethical attempt to sway public opinion by preying on people's fears. The video directly attacks Péter Magyar, leader of the center-right Tisza party, falsely claiming he will drag Hungary into the conflict in Ukraine.
These claims are baseless and represent a dangerous escalation of political rhetoric. Fidesz alleges that Magyar, if elected, would use pension funds to support Ukraine and impose forced conscription – accusations that have been repeatedly refuted by Magyar and his party. The deployment of AI-generated content allows Fidesz to amplify these falsehoods on a massive scale, reaching millions of voters with emotionally charged propaganda. Zsófia Fülöp, a journalist at Lakmusz, Hungary’s only independent fact-checking website, rightly points out that while such narratives are not new, the sheer scale of AI-driven disinformation is unprecedented. This is a deliberate strategy to drown out factual reporting and create a climate of confusion and fear.
The manipulation extends beyond the graphic execution video. Another AI-generated video, disseminated by the pro-Fidesz National Resistance Movement (NEM), portrays European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen conspiring with Péter Magyar to funnel money to Ukraine. This video, which garnered over 3.7 million views, was initially presented without disclosing its AI origin, further blurring the lines between reality and fabrication. Orbán's willingness to share and amplify this disinformation, even while acknowledging its artificial nature, demonstrates a disturbing disregard for the truth and a willingness to exploit any means necessary to maintain power.
This reliance on disinformation has serious implications for Hungarian democracy and the stability of the region. By promoting xenophobia and fear of foreign intervention, Fidesz is undermining public trust in institutions and fostering a climate of division. It is crucial that international organizations and independent media outlets continue to expose these deceptive tactics and hold Fidesz accountable for its actions. Support for independent journalism, like Lakmusz, is vital in combating the spread of disinformation and ensuring that Hungarian citizens have access to accurate information. Ultimately, the fight against AI-driven disinformation requires a multi-pronged approach: increased media literacy, robust fact-checking initiatives, and a commitment to holding those who spread falsehoods accountable. The future of Hungarian democracy hinges on the ability to resist these manipulative tactics and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. The world must stand in solidarity with those in Hungary fighting for a more just and equitable society.
