Can Maine Voters Reject Trumpism by Ousting Collins?
Susan Collins' moderate facade crumbles as challenger Graham Platner champions working-class Mainers against right-wing policies.

Maine voters face a critical choice in the upcoming Senate election: whether to continue enabling regressive policies by re-electing Susan Collins or to embrace progressive change with challenger Graham Platner. For decades, Collins has cultivated an image as a moderate Republican, occasionally dissenting from the most extreme aspects of the Republican agenda. However, her record reveals a pattern of supporting policies that harm working families, undermine reproductive rights, and perpetuate systemic inequality.
The Democratic Party views Maine as a crucial battleground in its effort to reclaim the Senate. Collins is particularly vulnerable given her voting record and the shifting political landscape. Platner, a marine veteran, presents an opportunity for Maine to elect a leader who prioritizes the needs of ordinary people over corporate interests and far-right ideologies. Despite facing scrutiny for past online comments, Platner's message of economic justice and social equality has resonated with Mainers eager for change.
Collins' support for Trump's agenda, including the appointment of conservative judges like Brett Kavanaugh, has had devastating consequences for women and marginalized communities. The Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, stripped millions of Americans of their reproductive rights, directly impacting women's health and economic security. Collins' vote to confirm Kavanaugh, despite credible allegations of sexual assault, demonstrates a callous disregard for the experiences of survivors.
Platner is rightly framing Collins’ so-called moderation as a form of complicity. Her occasional symbolic breaks with Trump do little to counteract the harm caused by her support for his policies. By voting for tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the wealthy, gutting environmental regulations, and obstructing efforts to address climate change, Collins has consistently sided with corporate elites at the expense of working-class Mainers and the planet.
In contrast, Platner is offering a bold vision for a more just and equitable Maine. He has pledged to fight for policies that expand access to healthcare, raise the minimum wage, invest in renewable energy, and protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. His commitment to addressing systemic racism and police brutality reflects a deep understanding of the challenges facing marginalized communities in Maine and across the country.
