Meta's AI Pivot: Workers Face Mandatory Reassignments, Increased Surveillance
As Meta doubles down on artificial intelligence, thousands of employees are being forced into new roles and subjected to intrusive monitoring, raising concerns about worker rights and exploitation.

Menlo Park, CA – Meta's relentless pursuit of artificial intelligence is coming at a significant cost to its workforce, as the tech giant mandates the reassignment of over 7,000 employees to new AI-focused teams, accompanied by intrusive surveillance measures that threaten worker autonomy and privacy. The Guardian reports that this massive reorganization includes the creation of teams dedicated to AI cloud infrastructure and an internal AI agent named Hatch.
This latest restructuring follows a similar move last month, where at least 1,000 engineers were forcibly transferred to a data labeling team called Applied AI (AAI). What began as a purported voluntary opportunity quickly morphed into a mandatory draft, setting a troubling precedent for how Meta treats its employees in the face of its AI ambitions. Now, history is repeating itself, as workers are being “selected” for reassignment, raising fears of another non-voluntary transfer.
According to an internal memo viewed by The Guardian, Meta's VP of production engineering, Peter Hoose, frames the changes as a necessary response to the “unprecedented” pace of AI development. However, this justification rings hollow to many employees, who see it as a thinly veiled excuse for prioritizing corporate profits over worker well-being.
The reorganization also includes a restructuring of management roles, with some managers losing their direct reports and being pushed into individual contributor roles. This flattening of the management structure is presented as a streamlining effort, but it effectively reduces opportunities for advancement and further concentrates power at the top.
Compounding these concerns is Meta's decision to implement an extensive workplace monitoring tool called Model Capability Initiative. This Orwellian system tracks employees' every move – mouse movements, keystrokes, even copy-paste actions – feeding this data into AI models as training material. This level of surveillance raises serious ethical questions about worker privacy and the potential for misuse of personal data.
A Meta spokesperson claims the monitoring is necessary to train AI agents to assist users with everyday tasks. However, critics argue that this justification is disingenuous, pointing out that there are less intrusive ways to gather data without subjecting employees to constant surveillance. The move is seen as a blatant attempt to extract maximum value from workers, treating them as mere cogs in the AI machine.
