Netanyahu's Gaza Land Grab Threatens Humanitarian Catastrophe
Israeli PM's order to seize 70% of Gaza Strip risks ethnic cleansing and further immiseration of Palestinians already living under blockade.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the Israeli army to seize 70% of the Gaza Strip, a move that blatantly violates the already fragile ceasefire agreement and threatens to create an unmitigated humanitarian disaster for the 2.2 million Palestinians trapped in the besieged territory. Speaking from an illegal West Bank settlement, Netanyahu's announcement reveals a callous disregard for international law and the fundamental human rights of the Palestinian people. The order directly undermines the US-brokered ceasefire from October, which stipulated that Israel would control 53% of the territory.
Since then, Israeli forces have steadily encroached upon Hamas-controlled areas, declaring an ever-expanding “no man’s land” where they claim the right to shoot at will. These actions have been accompanied by the forced displacement of Palestinian residents, often carried out by Israeli-backed militias who terrorize communities and force them to abandon their homes. The eight-month ceasefire has been marked by relentless Israeli violence, with over 900 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire and airstrikes.
Netanyahu, desperate to cling to power amidst plummeting poll numbers and corruption charges, is cynically exploiting the conflict to shore up support from the right-wing base. His actions demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice Palestinian lives and futures for his own political gain. The defense minister, Israel Katz, has openly admitted the government’s goal is to encourage the “voluntary migration” of Palestinians, a euphemism for ethnic cleansing. Human rights activists rightly condemn this as a deliberate strategy to make life in Gaza unbearable, forcing Palestinians to leave their ancestral homeland.
The expansion of Israeli control is a clear violation of the October ceasefire, the UN Security Council resolution endorsing it, and the already deeply flawed Trump peace plan. This latest escalation is not an isolated incident but part of a long-standing pattern of Israeli expansionism and oppression against the Palestinian people. Muhammad Shehada, a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, rightly points out that Netanyahu is effectively declaring the entire Trump deal “null and void.”
If Israel seizes 70% of Gaza, the remaining 2.2 million Palestinians will be crammed into less than a third of their original territory, which is already one of the most overcrowded places on Earth. The existing conditions in Gaza are already catastrophic, with widespread poverty, lack of access to clean water, and a crumbling infrastructure. The deliberate destruction of Palestinian homes and infrastructure by Israeli forces has exacerbated the crisis.
