Democracy Under Threat in Colombia as Leftist Iván Cepeda Concedes to Trump-Backed Millionaire Amid Foreign Interference
Progressives warn of a return to militarism and regional subordination as Abelardo de la Espriella prepares to join Trump's 'Shield of the Americas' alliance.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Colombia’s progressive movement suffered a major setback as Senator Iván Cepeda officially conceded the presidential runoff election to the far-right, Trump-backed millionaire lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella. The concession followed days of high tension after Sunday's voting, which showed a razor-thin margin of less than 1% separating the two candidates. For progressive forces, the rise of De la Espriella signals a grave threat to Colombia's fragile democratic institutions, its peace processes, and its national sovereignty.
The final voting numbers highlighted the deep ideological divide in the country. De la Espriella obtained 12.96 million votes, narrowly defeating Cepeda, who garnered 12.7 million votes. Despite the close margin—a difference of just 250,000 votes representing almost half the country's electorate—the official count verified a 99.997% match with Sunday's preliminary results. This left Cepeda with no choice but to concede the presidency to maintain democratic stability, though he made it clear that the struggle for social justice in Colombia would continue.
At a press conference in the capital city of Bogotá, Cepeda stated, "At this stage of the count, I have decided to accept the result of the process, which indicates that Abelardo de la Espriella is the new president of the republic. I do so as an act of democratic responsibility. I do so to contribute to coexistence, peace and dialogue among Colombians." Cepeda's words reflected a deep commitment to avoiding civil unrest, even as his supporters faced the prospect of a government hostile to their values.
However, Cepeda refused to remain silent about the structural injustices that compromised the election. He warned that accepting the numerical outcome did not mean legitimizing the campaign’s irregular conditions. "Accepting the electoral result does not mean renouncing the truth or remaining silent in the face of facts that we consider serious and that marked this presidential campaign," Cepeda said. Progressive observers have pointed to widespread systemic bias and hostile foreign interventions as factors that heavily tilted the scales in favor of the far-right millionaire.
Chief among these concerns was the unprecedented meddling of former United States President Donald Trump. Throughout the campaign, Trump used his platform to endorse De la Espriella while launching vitriolic attacks against the progressive candidate, labeling Cepeda a "radical left marxist." Cepeda strongly denounced this foreign intervention, stating, "We denounced the open and improper foreign interference in Colombia's internal affairs. In particular, the interventions carried out by the government of the United States and especially those of President Donald Trump in favour of Abelardo de la Espriella’s candidacy."
