Embracing the Mosaic: How the USMNT’s Diverse Pathways Defeated the Myth of a Single Nationalist Identity
The soccer federation’s historical attempt to impose a rigid, top-down European soccer model has been eclipsed by a multicultural patchwork of players from all walks of life.

The current composition of the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) stands as a powerful testament to the strength of multiculturalism and diverse human pathways over rigid, institutional centralization. Featuring a roster shaped by "military brats," birthright citizens, and individuals from vast cultural backgrounds, the team has turned what traditionalists viewed as a chaotic development system into its greatest collective asset. This evolution challenges the long-held soccer dogma that a nation must possess a singular, top-down cultural and athletic identity to achieve success on the global stage.
The history of American soccer is defined by a persistent struggle between elite central planning and organic, grassroots reality. In 1993, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) attempted to resolve this tension by hiring legendary Dutch coach Rinus Michels. Michels, celebrated for pioneering "Total Football" with his on-field partner Johan Cruyff, had a deep but distant relationship with American soccer, having managed the Los Angeles Aztecs in the NASL from 1979 to 1980. Michels had previously turned down the USMNT head coaching position twice—first during the flawed 1983 "Team America" experiment in the NASL, and again in 1991 when Bora Milutinović was ultimately selected.
USSF General Secretary Hank Steinbrecher did not hire Michels to coach, but to evaluate the soul of American soccer. Steinbrecher sent Michels and his wife on an extensive three-month tour across the United States to diagnose why the nation struggled to build a singular soccer identity. Michels’ conclusion was stark and highly perceptive: the United States was a continent, not a country. He emphasized that the soccer played in Los Angeles, shaped by specific local cultures and climates, was fundamentally different from the soccer played in Maine, Chicago, or Miami.
Michels' observations highlighted the limitations of attempting to transplant a European monoculture into the vast American landscape. In the Netherlands, where Michels had coached the national team across four separate eras—leading them to the 1974 World Cup final and the 1988 European Championship—the federation maintained a rigid, highly unified coaching methodology that dictated play from the professional ranks down to the smallest grassroots communities. Such a centralized model, while effective in a small, geographically contiguous country, ignored the regional diversity and socioeconomic realities of the United States.
Following Michels' initial assessment, Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz drafted a blueprint that pushed for a compromised version of centralization. Queiroz argued for the creation of a national training center to serve as incubator for youth talent, supported by regional hubs. This vision manifested in early 1999 as "Project 2010," which established a full-time residency program for the Under-17 national team in Bradenton, Florida.
