Trump's 'Good and Proper' Iran Deal: A Missed Opportunity for Peace?
As mediation continues, the pursuit of a perfect agreement risks undermining diplomatic progress and regional stability.

Washington D.C. - President Trump's assertion that any potential Iran deal must be 'good and proper' raises concerns that the pursuit of an ideal agreement may be jeopardizing the chance to de-escalate tensions and promote peace in the Middle East. While emphasizing the need for a suitable resolution, the president's remarks suggest a reluctance to compromise, potentially prolonging a stalemate that disproportionately impacts ordinary Iranians.
The original Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), negotiated in 2015, offered a framework for curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief. The agreement, while not perfect, represented a significant diplomatic achievement and a pathway towards greater cooperation.
However, the Trump administration's unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018 reversed this progress, reimposing crippling sanctions that have devastated Iran's economy and exacerbated social inequalities. These sanctions have not only hurt the Iranian people, limiting their access to essential goods and services, but also undermined efforts to promote human rights and democratic reforms within the country.
The current mediation efforts offer a chance to rectify this mistake and return to a path of diplomacy. A renewed JCPOA, even with imperfections, would be a significant step towards reducing the risk of nuclear proliferation and fostering greater stability in the region. It would also provide much-needed relief to the Iranian people, allowing them to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
Progressive voices argue that the focus should be on the tangible benefits of a revived JCPOA, rather than holding out for an unattainable ideal. The pursuit of a 'good and proper' agreement, as defined by the Trump administration, risks perpetuating the cycle of sanctions and escalation, further harming ordinary Iranians and undermining the prospects for lasting peace.
Moreover, the continued imposition of sanctions has been criticized for disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, including women, children, and marginalized communities. These sanctions have limited access to healthcare, education, and other essential services, further exacerbating existing inequalities.
Critics of the Trump administration's approach argue that a more nuanced and humane policy is needed, one that prioritizes the well-being of the Iranian people and recognizes the importance of diplomacy in resolving complex international disputes. A renewed JCPOA, coupled with targeted support for civil society and human rights, could offer a more effective path towards promoting positive change within Iran.
The international community must work together to ensure that the current mediation efforts are successful and that a renewed JCPOA is implemented as soon as possible. The stakes are too high to allow political considerations to stand in the way of peace and stability. The future of the Iranian people, and the region as a whole, depends on it.
The pursuit of a 'good and proper' agreement should not come at the expense of human rights, social justice, and the well-being of ordinary Iranians.
