Unchecked Authority and Violence: Louisiana Sheriff Resigns After Brutal Assault on Vocal Critic
The violent attack on blogger Bobby Couvillion by Sheriff Randy Smith exposes the deep-seated corruption and lack of accountability within local law enforcement.

In a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked police power, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith has been forced into retirement after pleading guilty to a vicious, alcohol-fueled assault on a local podcaster. The resignation of the 61-year-old sheriff, a dominant political figure who has ruled the parish for a decade, was a mandatory condition of a plea deal. The agreement also sentences him to over a year of probation, bringing a disgraceful end to his forty-year career in policing.
The victim of this institutional violence was Bobby Couvillion, a 59-year-old local blogger who has consistently used his platform to expose corruption and incompetence within Smith's department. On May 29, while Couvillion was celebrating his birthday with his wife at Keith Young’s Steakhouse, the sheriff decided to silence his critic through physical intimidation. This incident highlights a systemic issue where powerful law enforcement figures believe they are entirely above the law and entitled to brutalize those who dare to question their authority.
According to state investigators, Smith blindsided Couvillion, grabbing him from behind in a chokehold and throwing him backward off a barstool. What followed was a display of state-sanctioned savagery: Smith repeatedly punched and kicked the prone victim with his heavy boots. During the beating, Smith screamed, "I'm going to kill you, you motherfucker. You're a dead motherfucker," demonstrating the toxic, violent entitlement that often festers in powerful law enforcement offices.
This abuse of power was not limited to the sheriff alone. The investigation revealed a deeply troubling alliance between law enforcement and the local cash bail industry. Gregory Saurage, a local bail bondsman, was also arrested after investigators found he pointed Couvillion out to the sheriff, actively encouraged the beating, and then served as the getaway driver, using his office vehicle to spirit the sheriff away from the scene of the crime.
The response to the crime further underscores the systemic conflicts of interest inherent in local justice systems. St. Tammany deputies initially responded to the scene but quickly backed away once they realized their own boss was the perpetrator. While the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) eventually took over, the local judiciary immediately protected its own, with a half-dozen local judges recusing themselves from presiding over the sheriff's prosecution.
Furthermore, the state's investigation revealed the lavish, taxpayer-funded lifestyle of the local elite. Investigators documented a $346 bar tab belonging to Smith and his entourage, which showed the consumption of 18 alcoholic beverages—including vodka martinis, wine, and gin—during a Friday afternoon. This excessive consumption immediately preceded the brutal assault that left Couvillion hospitalized with a concussion and two displaced front teeth.
