KYIV, Ukraine — A barrage of Russian drone and missile strikes on Kyiv early Thursday morning resulted in at least one death and 31 injuries, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region and highlighting the disproportionate impact of the conflict on civilians.

The attacks, which targeted civilian infrastructure and residential buildings, underscore the disregard for international humanitarian law and the urgent need for accountability for war crimes. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko reported that the attacks impacted numerous cities, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of the devastation. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's Military Administration, confirmed the use of ballistic missiles and drones, leaving six districts scarred.

The assault extended beyond Kyiv, affecting Kremenchuk, Bila Tserkva, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Odesa, revealing a widespread pattern of indiscriminate attacks on civilian populations.

The partial collapse of a multi-story residential building in Kyiv's Darnytsia district, trapping residents under rubble, serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict. While 27 people were rescued, the incident exposed the vulnerability of civilian housing and the inadequacy of existing protections. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported the destruction of 18 apartments and water supply disruptions, exacerbating the challenges faced by ordinary citizens.

Lyudmila Hlushko, a 78-year-old resident, recounted the terror of the attack, highlighting the psychological toll inflicted on civilians living under constant threat of bombardment. Her experience is just one example of the trauma experienced by countless Ukrainians who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and sense of security.
