The appointment of former attorney general Alejandro Gertz Manero as Mexico’s new ambassador to the United Kingdom has brought a troubling reality to the forefront of the nation's political consciousness. While the governing Morena party has built its entire moral and political platform on the core promise of uplifting the marginalized—solidified under the banner "For the good of all, first the poor"—the luxury assets disclosed by the new ambassador reveal how deeply entrenched generational wealth remains within the halls of public power.

According to Gertz Manero's recent financial filing, his personal fortune stands in stark contrast to the reality of the millions of working-class Mexicans his party represents. The ambassador’s holdings include ten houses, seven vehicles—featuring two Rolls-Royces, one valued at an astronomical $150,000 (£115,000)—jewelry worth over $1 million, and an art collection valued at nearly half a million dollars. He also holds bank accounts across the globe, from Mexico and the United States to European financial havens in Spain and Switzerland, alongside a $1 million US property and a Madrid flat purchased for €1 million (£860,000).

While Gertz Manero defended these holdings by stating in his public filing that many of his assets were inherited, this defense only highlights the systemic nature of class privilege. In a country where wealth inequality is historically rampant and the lifestyles of public officials are under constant, necessary scrutiny, the possession of such vast, inherited fortunes by public servants undermines the democratic aspiration of a government truly of and for the people. It raises critical questions about whether those born into extreme privilege can genuinely champion the structural changes needed to dismantle inequality.

This ostentatious accumulation of wealth stands as a direct contradiction to the historic progress Morena has achieved. The party’s welfare policies have successfully helped lift 13.4 million people out of poverty, a milestone that demonstrated the power of redistributive social policy. However, the presence of multi-millionaires in key diplomatic posts threatens to dilute this legacy, turning a revolutionary movement into a vehicle for wealthy elites who co-opt progressive narratives while maintaining their private fortunes.

As Viri Ríos, public policy expert and director of Mexico Decoded, notes, this divergence represents a severe internal contradiction. Ríos points out that a deep rift has formed between the populist, pro-poor narrative Morena champions and the actual composition of the party, which has increasingly become a mix of officials, politicians, and wealthy personalities. When the face of the nation in international capitals like London is defined by Rolls-Royces and million-dollar jewelry, the narrative of a government dedicated to the poor begins to ring hollow to the working class.
