Rather than taking responsibility for the rapid deterioration of the century-old landmark, President Donald Trump has deflected blame by fabricating claims of coordinated sabotage. In posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump alleged that vandals had cut a “350-foot gash” into the pool's lining “in the dark of night” and shared an image of the dry pool claiming it showed “the hard rubber surface” before it was supposedly destroyed. Despite promising that the Department of the Interior would release comprehensive video and photographic evidence of the vandalism, no such proof has materialized, and internal government documents obtained by the New York Times reveal there is absolutely no indication of intentional damage.

Congressional oversight is now ramping up as the administration's narrative falls apart. On Wednesday, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal demanded immediate accountability, sending a sharply worded letter to Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and National Park Service Acting Director Jessica Bowron. The project was initiated to satisfy a highly personalized aesthetic demand from the president, who insisted on draining the pool and coating its floor in a custom shade he designated “American flag blue.” Trump prematurely declared the project finished on June 6, boasting that it would be a gleaming centerpiece for the upcoming holiday. However, the decision to rush the project without adequate environmental reviews soon bore grim results. Within days, a massive green algae bloom took over, completely blocking the blue lining from view.
