Virginia Official Denounces DOJ Probe of Progressive Prosecutor as Politically Motivated Attack
Fairfax County Supervisor Dan Storck slams the investigation into Steve Descano, highlighting potential bias and discriminatory targeting of marginalized communities.

Fairfax, VA – A Virginia county supervisor has condemned the Department of Justice's (DOJ) investigation into Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano as a politically motivated attack aimed at undermining progressive criminal justice reform. Dan Storck, representing the Mount Vernon District, labeled the probe a “hit job,” raising concerns about the Trump administration's targeting of individuals and policies they oppose. The DOJ's investigation is centered on allegations that Descano’s office may have provided preferential treatment to criminal illegal immigrants. This focus, critics argue, serves to perpetuate xenophobic narratives and discriminatory practices within the criminal justice system. The probe, initiated by the DOJ Civil Rights Division under Harmeet Dhillon, is investigating if Descano's charging and plea deal decisions violated federal laws prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, or national origin. However, Storck and other advocates contend that the investigation is a pretext for attacking Descano's progressive policies, which aim to reduce racial disparities and promote fairer outcomes for all defendants. Storck argued that the investigation is a continuation of the Trump administration’s pattern of targeting individuals and communities they disfavor, using the DOJ as a tool for political retribution. "They make up stuff and then they go after them," he said, expressing a lack of confidence in the impartiality of the DOJ under the current administration. The controversy surrounding Descano intensified following criticism of his office’s handling of a case involving Abdul Jalloh, an immigrant from Sierra Leone, who was later accused of killing Stephanie Minter. Opponents have used this case to fuel anti-immigrant sentiment and attack Descano’s broader reform efforts. Descano has defended his policies, asserting they are “fair, legal, and reflect the values of my community.” He argues that his office is committed to ensuring equal justice for all, regardless of immigration status. Storck emphasized the importance of accountability for repeat offenders but cautioned against using individual cases to justify discriminatory policies. He reiterated the role of the courts in ensuring fair and just outcomes, while also advocating for addressing systemic issues that contribute to crime. "The key is that we need to address folks who have a history of not abiding by the law and we need to make sure that those individuals have consequences," Storck said. "In the end, I realize that's the courts, but that's something that I feel very strongly about." Storck highlighted the importance of focusing on addressing significant and serious crimes, rather than targeting individuals based on their immigration status or perceived political affiliations. The investigation raises concerns about the potential chilling effect on progressive prosecutors and the erosion of trust in the justice system. Advocates are calling for greater transparency and accountability from the DOJ, urging them to conduct a fair and impartial investigation that does not perpetuate discriminatory narratives. The unfolding events underscore the ongoing struggle for criminal justice reform and the need to protect progressive policies from politically motivated attacks.
