Congressional Dems Condemn Trump's Cuba Aggression, Migrant Detention Plan
Progressive lawmakers denounce the administration's policies as exacerbating a humanitarian crisis and perpetuating human rights abuses at Guantánamo Bay.

Washington D.C. – Over thirty members of Congress, led by Representative Delia Ramirez (D-IL), have issued a strong condemnation of the Trump administration's escalating aggression toward Cuba, warning against military intervention and the inhumane proposal to detain Cuban migrants at Guantánamo Bay. In a letter to the Secretaries of Defense, State, and Homeland Security, the lawmakers highlighted the direct link between aggressive U.S. policies and the growing humanitarian crisis driving Cuban migration.
The letter underscores the devastating impact of the U.S. fuel blockade and additional sanctions on the Cuban population, framing these measures as deliberate acts of economic warfare that disproportionately harm vulnerable communities. The lawmakers argue that the administration's policies are designed to destabilize the Cuban government at the expense of human lives, forcing Cubans to flee their homes in search of safety and economic survival.
“US policies have deliberately targeted Cuban civilians and contributed to their displacement as well as their deaths,” the representatives wrote, condemning the administration's blatant disregard for human rights and international law. This aggressive approach, they argue, not only violates fundamental principles of human dignity but also undermines U.S. credibility on the global stage.
The proposed use of Guantánamo Bay as a migrant detention center is particularly alarming to progressive lawmakers. Citing the facility’s “well-documented record of abuse,” they argue that it is an egregious violation of human rights to detain vulnerable migrants in a military prison known for torture, indefinite detention, and denial of due process. This proposal, they say, is not a solution to the migration crisis but a cynical attempt to contain the consequences of the very policies driving it.
“Planning for their detention at Guantánamo is not a response to migration – it is an attempt to contain the consequences of the exact policies that are driving it,” the letter states, highlighting the administration's callous disregard for the suffering of Cuban migrants.
Representative Ramirez and her colleagues emphasize the need for a radical shift in U.S.-Cuba policy, advocating for the immediate lifting of sanctions and an end to the economic blockade. They argue that genuine humanitarian assistance and a commitment to peaceful diplomacy are the only viable paths toward a more just and equitable relationship between the two nations.
