Silwan Faces Ethnic Cleansing as Israel Expands Settlement Project
Palestinian families in East Jerusalem are being forcibly displaced to make way for Israeli settlers, fueling accusations of ethnic cleansing and systematic discrimination.
East Jerusalem – The predominantly Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem is facing what activists are calling a slow-motion ethnic cleansing, as Israeli authorities continue to demolish Palestinian homes and facilitate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements. This ongoing displacement threatens to erase the Palestinian presence in the city and undermine any possibility of a just and lasting peace.
Fakhri Abu Diab, a lifelong resident of Silwan, is a victim of this discriminatory policy. Two years ago, Israeli authorities demolished his family home, claiming it lacked the necessary building permits. Yet, residents and human rights groups assert that Palestinians are routinely denied permits, creating a Catch-22 where they are forced to build without authorization, only to have their homes destroyed. Abu Diab and his wife now live in a makeshift trailer on their own land, facing yet another eviction notice.
This systematic denial of building permits is part of a broader strategy to marginalize Palestinians and facilitate the expansion of settlements, which are illegal under international law. The construction of these settlements not only violates international law but also exacerbates tensions and undermines the prospects for a two-state solution.
Activists point to the stark contrast between the treatment of Palestinian residents and Israeli settlers. While Palestinians face constant threats of demolition and displacement, settlers enjoy preferential treatment and benefit from government-funded infrastructure and services. This disparity underscores the unequal power dynamics at play and the discriminatory nature of Israeli policies in East Jerusalem.
The International Court of Justice has affirmed that Israel unlawfully occupies East Jerusalem and the West Bank, yet Israel continues to defy international law and expand its settlement enterprise. This disregard for international norms undermines the credibility of the international community and emboldens Israel to continue its violations.
Angela Godfrey-Goldstein, an Israeli peace activist, highlights the injustice of the situation, noting the luxurious living conditions enjoyed by settlers while Palestinian families are forced to live in poverty and displacement. The sight of well-manicured gardens and surveillance cameras protecting settler homes serves as a constant reminder of the inequality and oppression faced by Palestinians in Silwan.
